Nivalis developed its TRU-POWER® system specifically for battery-electric transport refrigeration applications. Rather than relying heavily on non-optimized off-the-shelf components, Nivalis engineered advanced battery and power electronics systems designed around the operational requirements of refrigerated fleet operators.
The design strategy focused on reducing total cost of ownership while maintaining the usability, serviceability and reliability fleet operators expect from diesel-powered refrigeration units. Nivalis also structured the system around modular installation requirements, allowing trailers to be outfitted and returned to service within two days through its nationwide dealer and installer network.
It believes minimizing installation downtime is essential for broader fleet adoption because operators remain highly sensitive to disruptions affecting route schedules and equipment availability.
Engineering Refrigeration around Fleet Reliability
Fleet operators transitioning away from diesel refrigeration systems often face concerns involving emissions compliance, maintenance costs and refrigeration reliability during demanding daily operations. Nivalis’ TRU-POWER® operates entirely on electricity for routes lasting up to 14 hours, including while parked and charging.
It also subjects the system to extensive validation testing including MIL-STD vibration, salt spray, humidity, electromagnetic compatibility and ingress protection testing against dust, gravel and water exposure. Nivalis believes those standards were necessary because refrigeration failure during transport can result in complete product loss for operators.
Nivalis’ engineering brings experience from heavy-duty battery systems used in trucks, buses and ocean-going vessels where safety and reliability requirements are particularly stringent. This background shapes the company’s broader design philosophy centered on maximizing system reliability while lowering long-term operating expenses.
Its customers currently operating deployed systems are realizing average annual savings of approximately $12,000 per trailer through reduced fuel and maintenance costs compared to conventional diesel refrigeration systems.
Supporting Electrified Fleet Transition
One deployment involving poultry producer Koch Foods demonstrated how the company’s refrigeration platform performed under real fleet conditions. Through its Sustainability in Action program, Koch Foods sought to reduce transportation expenses, lower energy consumption and decrease carbon emissions across refrigerated operations.
Nivalis implemented the TRU-POWER® system across seven refrigerated trailers operating fully on electricity during refrigeration activity. Diesel fuel consumption for refrigeration was eliminated entirely while maintenance expenses declined by 64 percent.
Koch Foods reported approximately $99,000 in annual savings across the seven electrified trailers. During early deployment, drivers occasionally attempted to move trailers while charging connections remained engaged, causing minor repairable damage to charging components.
Nivalis responded by updating operating procedures and introducing a glad hand-style interlock preventing trailer movement while charging remained connected. The company stated that those modifications significantly reduced further incidents.
Nivalis expects electrification, battery energy storage and stricter emissions regulations to continue reshaping cold-chain logistics. It believes diesel-powered refrigeration systems will become increasingly difficult to justify as electric alternatives improve operating economics and environmental performance.
Nivalis plans to continue expanding production capacity, dealer partnerships and charging infrastructure support while helping fleet operators transition toward quieter, fully electric refrigeration systems built around long-term reliability and lower operating costs.
